DENMARK, S.C. — Voorhees University Softball continues to make noise early this season as two Lady Tigers earned weekly recognition from the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) for their standout performances from Feb. 2–8.
Freshman Eddrain Schenkel was named HBCUAC Freshman of the Week, while Ta'Keyvia Sims claimed HBCUAC Newcomer of the Week honors, the conference announced Tuesday.
Schenkel Leads with Confidence
Schenkel turned in an impressive week at the plate, recording four hits in eight at-bats across three games while scoring two runs. She also drove in a run in a midweek contest against NCAA Division I opponent Savannah State University, showcasing her ability to compete against high-level competition.
The freshman posted a .556 on-base percentage for the week, consistently finding ways to get on base and provide offensive momentum for the Lady Tigers.
Sims Sparks the Offense
Sims continued her strong start to the season, tallying four hits, two runs and an RBI in four games. Through the first two weeks of conference play, she ranks fourth in the HBCUAC with a .364 batting average.
In addition to her production at the plate, Sims has been a force on the basepaths. She is the only player in the conference to record multiple stolen bases during the opening two two weeks of the season, adding speed and versatility to the Lady Tigers' lineup.
Representing Denmark with Pride
From Denmark, the Lady Tigers continue to demonstrate their competitiveness and depth as they build momentum in the early part of the season. With two weekly honors already secured, Voorhees softball is positioning itself as a team to watch in conference play.
Schenkel and Sims' performances not only highlight individual excellence but reflect the continued growth and determination of the Lady Tigers program.
