HOST VOORHEES WOMEN DEFEAT WILBERFORCE 51-40

DENMARK, SC – The Host Voorhees women built a 19-point lead midway the final period and beat back a rally by Wilberforce to grab a 51-40 win Friday in first-day action of the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) three-day POD at the Jerry C. Screen Arena.

TyShemia Bunkley tossed in 15 points to lead Coach Edward Glover's squad. Cambria Parker contributed 12 points and three assists, and Hallia Carl 11 points and four steals in the victory, which lifted the Lady Tigers to 5-11 on the season and 3-3 in the CAC. Grace Lupumba paced Voorhees on the boards with eight rebounds to go along with five points.

The Lady Bulldogs of Wilberforce were led by Dreann Pryce with 13 points, while Jada Hairston with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Kaia Edward did not score for the visitors, however, she did pull down eight boards for her team. Wilberforce fell to 2-17 and 1-3 in the CAC.

Voorhees took a 14-9 lead after one period but was only ahead 22-19 at the half. Glover's team outscored Wilberforce 18-7 in the third to build a 40-26 advantage after three periods. Parker had seven of her total and Carl added two baskets from behind the arc in the period.

A 9-4 run to start the final period gave Voorhees its biggest lead of the contest, 49-30, following three straight free throws by Zayniah Snow with 4:17 remaining in the contest. Wilberforce scored the game's next 10 points, six by Hairston, to close the gap to 49-40 but only 45 seconds remained. Parker got two free throws for the Lady Tigers to round out the scoring, 51-40.

Wilberforce enjoyed a 50-34 advantage on the boards, however, the Ohio school committed 31 turnovers that led to 23 Voorhees points.

The Voorhees women will meet Haskell Indian Nation at 2 p.m. on Saturday, with a matchup between the two men's teams to follow at 4.
