HASKELL INDIAN NATIONS WOMEN GET BY VOORHEES 60-53 SATURDAY
DENMARK, SC – Miracle Spotted Bear tossed in 19 points and Janae Kalama and Marilyn Goodman added 11 each to lift Haskell Indian Nations to a 60-53 win over host Voorhees Saturday during Day 2 of the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) POD at the Jerry C. Screen Arena.
Mahpiya Irving added nine points, three assists and two steals in the victory, which gave the Fightin Indians an 8-15 overall record and a 4-2 worksheet in the conference. Tierzah Penn grabbed six rebounds to lead Coach Adam Strom's squad.
Host Voorhees was led by Hallia Carl who came off the bench for 17 points, four assists and two steals. Ty'Shemia Bunkley added nine points and Alyssa Herder seven in the loss, which dropped Coach Edward Glover's team to 5-14 and 3-4 in league play.
Haskell gabbed an early 10-6 lead in the contest following back-to-back 3-pointers by Spotted Bear with 3:57 on the first-period clock, but the Lady Tigers scored the final 10 points of the period to go ahead 16-10 after one.
The Fightin Indians rallied to tie at 18-all with 5:20 remaining in the second quarter and following a 21-21 deadlock with 4:15 showing, closed the period on 9-3 run to build a 30-26 advantage at the half.
The visitors outscored Voorhees 14-8 to lead 44-32 after three periods. The Lady Tigers won the final stanza 21-16 but were unable to overcome the 12-point third-period deficit.
Voorhees men and women will meet Washington Adventist Sunday, the final day of the three-day POD, with the women's contest set for 1 p.m.
