HASKELL MEN RACE BY WASHINGTON ADVENTIST 68-54
DENMARK, SC – Nahcs Wahwassuck had 25 points to lead three Haskell Indian Nation players in double figures and added 10 rebounds in the Fightin Indians' 68-54 triumph over Washington Adventist Friday in first-day competition of the three-day Central Athletics Conference (CAC) Pod hosted by Voorhees University at the Jerry C. Screen Arena.
Nehemiah Boykins added 13 points and Dakari Middleton 11, along with a game-high 14 rebounds in the contest. Haskell improved to 8-14 and 5-3 in the league.
The win gave Haskell a sweep against Washington Adventist on the day as the Fightin Indians' women beat the Washington women 80-61 earlier in the day.
Washington Adventist was paced by Isaiah Anderson with 18 points and eight boards. Shyheim Gilkerson added 10 points and was one of three Shock players with six rebounds. Emanuel Hyton and Josiah also had six boards each in the loss, which dropped Washington to 7-8 and 0-1 in league play.
Washington Adventist raced to a 22-12 lead in the contest on a three-point play by Derrick Hopkins at the 8:50 mark of the first half before Haskell, on the shooting of Wahwassuck, went on a 14-6 run to close to within 28-26 at the half.
The Fightin Indians scored the first 12 points of the final half to build a 38-26 advantage with 15:57 on the second-half clock. Anderson got two layups for the Shock but Middleton got inside for a basket for Haskell to trigger a 23-12 spree that put the Fightin Indians ahead 63-45 with 4:16 left on the clock. The closest Washington came after that was 14 twice, the last time at the final score, 68-54.
Haskell enjoyed a big edge at the free throw line, connecting on 18-24 attempts to just an 8-16 effort by Washington, which won the rebounding battle 46-41.
The shooting percentages were fairly close as Haskell hit 40 percent of its attempts (22-58) from the field, while the Shock had a 34.4 accuracy (22-64).
In the nightcap, the Voorhees women and men met Wilberforce of Ohio, which had some traveling issues but arrived in time to get the women's game underway with only a 35-minute delay.
