Voorhees University Tigers Face Narrow Defeat in HBCU Athletic Conference Basketball Game

By: Norman O'Neal

In a closely contested basketball game, the Voorhees University Tigers were edged out by Oakwood University (AL) with a final score of 85-83. This regular season HBCU Athletic Conference game took place on November 22, 2025, at the Leonard E. Dawson Health and Human Resources Center.

The game began with Oakwood gaining an early lead as Grener Polynice scored the first points. Voorhees' Omari Bryson quickly responded with two consecutive 3-pointers, evening the score at 6-6. Despite strong performances from Voorhees, including defensive steals and effective shooting, Oakwood maintained their advantage, leading 38-37 at halftime.

The second half proved to be a tight contest with both teams exchanging leads. Notably, Daethan Harris of Voorhees sunk a critical free throw in the closing stages, making it a one-point game. However, Oakwood's consistent performance at the free-throw line throughout the game culminated in a pivotal moment when Devin Faulkner secured Oakwood's victory with crucial free throws in the final seconds.

Voorhees' Omari Bryson was a standout player, scoring a game-high 31 points, accompanied by Daethan Harris with 12 points. On the defensive side, Xavier Finney led with 4 rebounds while Bryson also contributed with 3 steals.

The Tigers will look to improve their current season record of 2-8, 1-1 in the conference, in their upcoming game on December 2, 2025, at Truett McConnell University.
