Lady Tigers Narrowly Defeated by Lady Bearcats in Voorhees University HBCU Conference Showdown

By: Norman O'Neal

In a tense HBCU Athletic Conference game on February 16, 2025, the Voorhees University Lady Tigers fell short against the Rust College Lady Bearcats at their home ground in Denmark, SC. Despite a spirited comeback and leading contributions from Shy'Kiera Brown and Caitlin Bowling, both scoring 13 points each, the Lady Tigers were narrowly beaten with a final score of 61-53 in favor of Rust College.

The game started challenging for Voorhees as they trailed behind with Rust College taking an early 8-point lead by the end of the first period. The Lady Tigers found themselves behind 13-5 courtesy of Rust's effective plays. It was only during the third quarter that Voorhees managed to pull ahead slightly, leading at 37-35, driven by critical plays from Shy'Kiera Brown and Caitlin Bowling who energetically pushed the team forward.

Despite the late game efforts and a tie at one point in the fourth quarter, Rust College maintained composure with their players Patsy Johnson and Jasmin Malone leading significant plays that secured their win. Voorhees University's stark performers included Cambria Parker, who not only topped the list with 7 rebounds but also led with 5 steals, marking a significant defensive effort. Alyssa Herder's notable block further highlights the defensive spirit of the Lady Tigers.

This loss takes the Lady Tigers' season record to 12-14, reflecting a challenging season in the NAIA College Basketball league. The focus now shifts to their next engagement against Paine College on February 18 in Augusta, GA, where the Lady Tigers aim to bounce back and improve their standing in the conference.
