The outdoor track and field season is just getting underway, but Jayden Burris has already made a powerful statement on the national stage.
The sophomore jumper from Voorhees University was named NAIA Men's National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on March 30, 2026, marking a major milestone in his rapidly rising career.
A Breakout Season in the Field Events
Burris, a native of Rock Hill, South Carolina, has emerged as one of the top jumpers in the NAIA ranks. Competing primarily in the triple jump and long jump, he has consistently delivered elite performances.
During the indoor season, Burris posted a leap of 15.62 meters (51-3) in the triple jump at the NAIA Indoor Championships, earning a podium finish and national recognition.
Even more impressive, his collegiate personal best has reached over 16 meters in the triple jump, showcasing his ability to compete among the nation's best.
Honors Keep Piling Up
This latest national honor is just one of several accolades Burris has collected in 2026. Earlier in the season, he was named:
- HBCUAC Preseason Field Athlete of the Year
- HBCUAC Field Athlete of the Week following a dominant early outdoor performance
These awards highlight his consistency and growing dominance in the field events.
From High School Standout to National Contender
Before arriving at Voorhees, Burris starred at Northwestern High School, where he showcased versatility across sprints and jumps. Since transitioning fully into horizontal jumps at the collegiate level, his development has accelerated.
Now a sophomore, he has transformed into a legitimate national contender combining speed, explosiveness, and refined technique to elevate his performances.
Leading Voorhees Into the Outdoor Season
Burris' success is also a major boost for the Voorhees track and field program. His performances have helped put the Tigers on the map early in the outdoor season, with expectations continuing to rise.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Burris to see if he can build on his momentum and chase a national title.
Bottom line:
Jayden Burris isn't just having a good start to the season—he's establishing himself as one of the premier jumpers in the NAIA. And if his current trajectory continues, this "Athlete of the Week" honor may be just the beginning.
