By: Norman O'Neal

Voorhees University's Lady Tigers have earned a spot in the prestigious HBCU Women's Basketball Top 10 rankings, reflecting the team's strong start to the season. In the latest update (as of October 30), the Lady Tigers secured the #9 position with an 8-2 record, underscoring their competitive drive and excellence on the court.

This ranking comes as part of the HBCU D2/NAIA Women's Basketball Top 10, where the team competes among some of the finest programs in the league. The top spot is currently held by Xavier University of Louisiana, with a perfect 12-0 record, followed by Langston University, which boasts an impressive 12-1 mark. Other notable teams in the rankings include Florida Memorial (10-1) and Stillman College (11-3).

Voorhees' inclusion in this elite group shows the team's consistent improvement and resilience. The Lady Tigers have demonstrated both offensive firepower and defensive strength, earning respect among the top programs in the HBCU basketball realm. As the season progresses, fans and analysts alike will be keeping a close eye on how the team continues to challenge these formidable opponents.

Key players have been instrumental in the team's success thus far, contributing across various statistical categories:

  • Ty'Shemia Bunkley has been a standout performer, leading the team with an impressive 15.2 points per game (PPG) and contributing 6.6 rebounds per game. Her shooting efficiency is also notable, hitting 33 field goals out of 105 attempts for a field goal percentage of 33.6%. Bunkley is currently on a quest to reach 1,000 career points, with just 29 points remaining to achieve this milestone. Her strong presence in the paint and on the glass makes her a vital part of the Lady Tigers' offense.

  • Kaelin Davis has been a key contributor on both ends of the floor. With an average of 9.6 PPG and 3.6 rebounds per game, Davis has proven to be reliable both as a scorer and a defender. She is shooting 39.5% from the field and has also contributed defensively with 21 steals on the season.

  • Alyssa Herder has shown her versatility, averaging 8.9 PPG and 5.4 rebounds per game. Her shooting accuracy has been stellar, hitting 51.3% of her field goal attempts, and she's made notable contributions defensively, accumulating 7 blocks. Her leadership on the court has been invaluable to the team's overall performance.

  • Nedisha Ford rounds out the core group of Lady Tigers, averaging 7.4 PPG and 4.5 rebounds per game. Ford has also been solid on defense with 9 steals and a solid rebounding presence, contributing to the team's success on both ends of the floor.

As the season continues, the Lady Tigers, alongside the men's basketball team, are gearing up for an exciting challenge in the Tuscaloosa pod starting tomorrow, January 3rd, for the HBCU Athletic Conference. Both teams are ready to compete fiercely as they face off against top-tier HBCU competition in this pivotal event.

With their current momentum, the Lady Tigers and their male counterparts are well-positioned to make a significant impact in both regional and national competitions. The support from their fans and the dedication of the players and coaching staff will surely propel them toward greater success as the season unfolds.
