Dr. Hopkins has made significant strides in advancing Voorhees University's athletic program. Under his leadership, the program transitioned from the Continental Athletic Conference to the HBCU Athletic Conference (formerly the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference), which has greatly enhanced opportunities for student-athletes and increased the program's visibility. He has contributed substantial financial support to the athletic program. His career includes notable positions at Benedict College, Claflin University, and Allen University. Additionally, he is an On-Site Reaffirmation Committee Evaluator for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

Dr. Hopkins is a distinguished member of the Class of 2020 Executive Leadership Academy by the American Academic Leadership Institute and has secured over $40 million in grant awards for higher education. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in English from Michigan State University and completed postdoctoral studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He earned his B.A. in English from North Carolina Central University and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters by Saint Monica University in Cameroon in 2016.

An international scholar, Dr. Hopkins has presented research in countries such as Liberia, Cameroon, China, Ghana, Mexico, Jamaica, and South Africa. He is also the Founder and Senior Artistic Director of NGOMA African Cultural Performance Troupe and is involved in various professional and community organizations, including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and Bible Way Church of Atlas Road. Dr. Hopkins has served on multiple boards, including the South Carolina African American Heritage Foundation and the University of South Carolina's McKissick Museum.
