Dr. Ronnie H. Hopkins has played a transformational role in elevating athletics at Voorhees University. Under his leadership, the university transitioned from the Continental Athletic Conference to the HBCU Athletic Conference (formerly the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference), significantly increasing competitive opportunities, institutional visibility, and championship access for student-athletes.
Dr. Hopkins has also provided substantial financial support and strategic investment into the athletic department, strengthening infrastructure, student-athlete services, and long-term program sustainability.
Prior to his presidency at Voorhees, Dr. Hopkins held notable leadership positions at Benedict College, Claflin University, and Allen University. He also serves as an On-Site Reaffirmation Committee Evaluator for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), contributing to institutional accreditation and quality assurance efforts nationwide.
A distinguished academic leader, Dr. Hopkins is a member of the Class of 2020 Executive Leadership Academy through the American Academic Leadership Institute and has secured more than $40 million in grant funding to support higher education initiatives.
He earned both his Ph.D. and M.A. in English from Michigan State University and completed postdoctoral studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his B.A. in English from North Carolina Central University and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Saint Monica University (Cameroon) in 2016.
An accomplished international scholar, Dr. Hopkins has presented research across the globe, including in Liberia, Cameroon, China, Ghana, Mexico, Jamaica, and South Africa. Beyond academia, he is Founder and Senior Artistic Director of the NGOMA African Cultural Performance Troupe and remains active in civic and professional organizations, including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and Bible Way Church of Atlas Road.
Dr. Hopkins has served on several prominent boards, including the South Carolina African American Heritage Foundation and the University of South Carolina’s McKissick Museum, further reflecting his commitment to education, culture, and community advancement.
Through visionary leadership and sustained investment, Dr. Hopkins continues to position Voorhees University Athletics for competitive excellence and national distinction.
