Jeffery B. Hughes, a native of Chester, South Carolina, is an accomplished educator and coach currently in his sixth year as Professor and Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country/Track & Field Coach at Voorhees University. His leadership and commitment to excellence were recognized in 2023 when he was named the university’s Inaugural Coach of the Year.

Under Hughes’ direction, the Tigers program has experienced significant growth and national visibility. He has developed 49 national qualifiers across indoor and outdoor track & field competition. His coaching résumé includes producing an NAIA National Champion, one national runner-up, and two All-Americans.

Among the historic milestones achieved during his tenure, Hughes coached the first Penn Relays champion in Voorhees history in the triple jump and the program’s first Eastern Region champion in the men’s 4x400-meter relay — landmark accomplishments that elevated the university’s presence on the national stage.

Through strategic leadership, athlete development, and a culture of accountability, Hughes has helped position the track & field program as a consistent championship contender. His dedication continues to inspire student-athletes to pursue excellence both academically and athletically.

Hughes is the proud father of Timothy and Talisa and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.
