Kenneth F. Sandiford (1921–2013) was a pioneering educator, decorated veteran, and championship coach whose influence shaped generations of student-athletes.

Born in Georgetown, British Guyana (now Guyana), South America, Sandiford received his early education at Bordentown Manual Training High School in Bordentown, New Jersey. He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II before pursuing higher education. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Shaw University and a Master of Arts degree from Indiana State University.

From 1954 to 1967, Sandiford taught at C.A. Johnson High School in Columbia, South Carolina, where he built one of the state’s premier track programs. His teams captured eight state championships, and in 1960, he led his squad to a third-place finish in the high school division at the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia — a remarkable accomplishment that showcased his coaching excellence on a national stage.

In 1967, Sandiford joined Voorhees College as Director of Athletics and Coordinator of Health and Physical Education. Under his leadership, the track & field program flourished, winning SIAC Conference Championships in 1973 and 1980. He was named SIAC Coach of the Year five times and earned NAIA District 6 Coach of the Year honors in 1980 and 1983.

Sandiford’s commitment to mentorship extended beyond collegiate athletics. He served for 11 years as Coordinator of Recreation at the Central Correctional Institution and remained active in numerous civic and humanitarian initiatives throughout his life.

Coach Sandiford passed away in 2013, leaving behind a lasting legacy of discipline, integrity, and excellence. He is survived by his wife, Lydia, his sons Karl, Darrell, and Kenneth, and his daughter, Lea.

His contributions to education and athletics continue to be remembered as foundational to the growth and success of track & field at Voorhees.
